Planning a shelter: the questions to settle first

Most enquiries we receive start with one of four questions: what will it cost, do I need a permit, which rules apply, and will it fit on my land. None of them has a one-line answer, but each has a clear order in which to work through it.

These guides are written from the perspective of a manufacturer in Germany. Where German law is mentioned, it is there as an example. If your site is in another country, local rules decide, and we say so where it matters.

Start here

If you are still deciding whether a shelter makes sense at all, read the page on prefabricated shelters first. It explains what is made in the plant, what happens on site, and where the limits of the approach are.

If you already have a plot in mind, go to the garden shelter guide. It covers space, access for the crane and what the ground needs to carry.

The guides

Each guide stands on its own. They link to each other where the topics overlap.

  • Prefabricated shelters: how factory production changes planning, quality and timing
  • Garden shelters: footprint, access and what to check on a private plot
  • Cost: the four blocks every quote is made of, and why we price after a site check
  • Building permits: what authorities usually want to see
  • Regulations: how countries differ, and what that means for a private or company project
